Laboratories

 

  The laboratory of Chemical and Petroleum Products is one of SASO's laboratories that was established to provide inspection and testing in order to ensure conformity of commodities to Saudi Standards. It conducts a set of tests in this area.

Laboratory of Chemical and Petroleum Products Units:- 
First: Chemical Elements Determination Unit
      Chemical Elements Determination Unit, at the Chemical and Petroleum Products Laboratory, provides distinctive services in the field of chemical analysis of various types of samples. It holds the latest advanced technology from the largest companies in the world. In addition, it has an experienced team with extensive experience in the field of analysis and interpretation of readings and results. The laboratory has received ISO IEC 17025: 2017 certificate for laboratories in water quality. The unit is working to expand the scope of accreditation to include other products.

      Chemical Elements Determination Unit has all the equipment and technologies, that enable it to conduct analysis at very low concentrations down to the PPT level of some elements and with high reliability, such as:
- Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP).
- Ion Chromatography (IC).
- Ion chromatography (IC) coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (IC-ICP-MS).
- Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS).
- Mercury Analyzer.
- pH Meter.
- Conductivity Meter.

      It analyzes water samples including anions and cations, heavy and rare elements. It also conducts analysis of chemical and physical properties of water; pH, electrical conductivity, and total dissolved salts in water.

      Analysis also includes samples of toys to detect toxins and heavy metals, in addition to school tools such as pencils and other samples.

Second: Chromatographic Separation Unit
      The Chromatographic Analysis Unit is one of the main pillars in the separation and identification of compounds, which cannot be separated by ordinary methods, in addition to the estimation of the percentage of concentration in a variety of products. It separates, identifies, and estimates components of a sample. The separation is done through the distribution of the sample between two different phases.

      The unit contains a modern and high accuracy apparatus to determine the suitability of the product for use. The suitability is assed in terms of conformity with the standard and depends on methods of testing, newly issued standards, and human competencies that have a scientific qualification and a highly trained.

      The unit also includes a number of apparatus that help ensure that products conform with standards:
- Gas Chromatography Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID).
- Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS).
- High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC).

      It conducts tests on synthetic detergents and estimates organic, volatile, and semi-volatile compounds in children's toys, textiles, shoes and many other products. It tests whether these products conform with the standard or not. The unit will soon seek ISO 17025 laboratory certification in its tests. It also attempts to provide an LC / MSMS device to expand the unit's testing field. 

Third: Petroleum Testing Unit 
      Petroleum products testing services include many refined petroleum products and fuels such as gasoline, diesel, petrol, oils, cooling water and other products in order to protect these products from fraud and ensure conformity with national and international standards. The best national and international testing methods are used for verification. It has been accredited according to ISO 17025 quality standards for a number of tests. 

      The unit has highly trained and experienced staff which enables it to conduct tests with high reliability. 
 
      The unit also includes a number of apparatus that help ensure that products conform with standard:
- Apparatus to determine flash point. 
- Apparatus to determine pour point. 
- Apparatus to determine foaming characteristics. 
- Apparatus to measure sulfur. 
- Apparatus of automated distillation. 
- Apparatus to determine viscosity at 40˚C and 100˚C. 
- Apparatus to determine viscosity at low temperatures. 
- Apparatus to determine dropping point. 
- Apparatus to determine fire point. 

Fourth: Microbiological Testing Unit
      The Microbiological Unit, at the Chemical and Petroleum Products Laboratory, provides excellent services to ensure the safety, security, and suitability of products for human consumption. It also makes sure that products are free from microbes harmful to consumer health through laboratory testing. The unit has a distinguished staff with a long experience in this field.

      The unit also includes a number of apparatus that help to ensure that products conform with standards and they are suitable for human use:
-  Autoclave steam sterilizer
- Monitor and analyzer of drinking water quality
- Different temperatures incubators 
- Hot air oven
- Colony counter
- Stomacher
      It analyzes water samples; counts and detects all types of microbes required in the water standards, some food products, and other samples. 
The laboratory is in the process of being developed to be able to analyze types of non-food products that are of primary interest to the consumer.
