SASO: 161,242 traffic accidents take place annually due to the use of mobile phones while driving

The Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) has appealed to vehicle drivers to adhere to the safety instructions and guidelines, especially not to use the mobile while driving, and make sure to fasten seat belts, pointing out that the statistics confirm that over (161,242) traffic accidents take place annually in the kingdom due to the use of mobile phones and lack of focus while driving. SASO revealed that the protection of airbags reduces significantly the death rate by 12% while the seat belt's protection is 40% to 60%, indicating the importance of wearing seat belts.

SASO stressed that the use of safety means have a very important role in the protection of car drivers, but must adhere to some instructions; to obtain the highest percentage of protection. SASO explained that the reliance on airbags alone in safety is not the right decision. The protection of airbags is limited to head-on collisions or rear-end collisions. However, seatbelts provide protection in case of side collisions. Airbags provide protection to the chest and head by preventing them from hitting the steering wheel or the windshield.

SASO indicated that it has made some of safety systems obligatory in vehicles starting from 2018 models, including driver and front passenger airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS), brake override system (BOS) , electronic stability control (ESC), tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and other safety systems in vehicles. In addition, SASO has prepared, updated and approved a number of Saudi standards related to vehicles, fuel or roads, including the approval of a number of standards for trailers, periodic inspection, modified cars, cat's eyes, reflective signs of vehicles, windscreen adhesive films and road signs and paints.

Furthermore, SASO issued several technical regulations related to the safety aspects of vehicles such as: Saudi technical regulation for front, rear, side under-run protective devices of trucks and trailers, - technical regulation for trailers and semi-trailers, technical regulation for auto spare parts, technical regulation for electric vehicles, and technical regulation for modified vehicles and limited production vehicles.
