SASO: 2019 to Witness Expansion of Field Operations for Calibration of Fuel Pumps

The Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) said that 2019 will witness an expansion in the field operations of the National Initiative for Legal Metrology "TAQYEES", which is expected to include non-automatic scales and fuel pumps.

SASO clarified that this comes after the start of the pilot launch of the field operations for legal metrology in September 2018, in Riyadh. SASO noted that (79) gas stations have been verified by periodic verification of (849) hose pumps, of which (783) were conforming hoses with a percentage of 92.2%. After maintenance, (14) hoses were verified. The official launch of this initiative took place in Jeddah and Dammam on January 01, 2019. All areas of the Kingdom will be followed from April 01, 2019.

SASO pointed out that coordination was carried out with the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and the General Directorate of Civil Defense in connection with procedures for granting and renewing licenses for fuel stations.

SASO explained that this initiative is part of SASO's initiatives within the National Transformation Program (NTP) 2020. Moreover, it noted that it has reviewed and updated the Executive Regulation to be more detailed and in line with the International Organization for Legal Metrology (OIML). SASO aims to clarify the detailed and supplementary provisions of the Measurement and Calibration Regulation and distribute an independent regulation of costs of measurement and calibration services on the same date of the publication of the Executive Regulation.

SASO revealed that it has opened the way for companies and institutions from the private sector wishing to provide verification services and conduct examinations to apply at SASO within the technical and administrative requirements. It has noted that the legal calibration team is conducting daily activities to clarify provisions of the Executive Regulation and technical annexes to the private sector and to the public. The team also answers inquiries of commercial enterprises including manufacturers, importers and operators of calibration devices.
