The Kingdom wins Chairmanship of SMIIC

       The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, represented by the Saudi Standards Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO), wins chairmanship of BOD of Standards and Metrology Institute for the Islamic Countries (SMIIC), for the period 2018-2020, during its participation in the 16th meeting of the institute's BOD held in Istanbul, Turkey on April 2, 2018 corresponding to Rajab 16, 1439 AH.

       SASO's win comes as a result of its vision to achieve regional leadership and scientific reference in the areas of standardization and conformity assessment, in addition to the achievements of the 12th General Meeting, held in the last quarter of 2017 in which the Kingdom was elected for the membership of BOD, Standardization Council and Accreditation Council for the period 2018-2020.

       The Kingdom participated in this meeting with a delegation headed by HE the Governor of SASO, Dr. Saad bin Othman Al-Kasabi and a number of officials from SASO and SFDA. For his part, the Governor of SASO, Dr. Saad bin Othman Al-Kasabi, expressed his sincere congratulations on this occasion to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman Bin Abdulaziz and His Royal Highness, Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, may God save them. Moreover, he stressed that the Kingdom's pioneering stems from the ability of its leadership to establish a prestigious position in all international occasions and events, which is consistent with the outputs of hard work emphasized in the Kingdom Vision 2030.

       Furthermore, he congratulated the Minister of Trade and Investment Dr. Majid bin Abdullah Al-Kasabi on this achievement expressing his hope that SASO will be one of the strong and supportive bodies to strengthen the Kingdom's leadership in all regional and local occasions related to standardization activities.

       The meeting discussed a number of important issues related to standardization and specification in Islamic countries to promote joint Islamic action. Moreover, the Republic of Sudan, the Republic of Pakistan and the Republic of Turkey were elected for the position of Vice-Chairman. Furthermore, the strategic plan of the Institute for the period 2016-2020 was discussed. Lastly, a previous Vice-Chairman of BOD was elected as Chairman of the Standardization Board (SMC) for the period 2018-2020.

       It is noteworthy that the Governor of SASO was a Vice-Chairman in SMIIC for the period 2014-2017, reflecting the leading role of the Kingdom in standardization activities in relevant regional and international organizations. The Kingdom will host the upcoming SMIIC meetings of the BOD No. (17) and the General Assembly No. (13) in Makkah during the month of November 2018, God willing.
