Makkah Hosts Delegations from more than 34 Islamic Countries to Enhance Cooperation in Standards

Meetings of the Board of Directors of the Standards and Metrology Institute for the Islamic Countries (SMIIC) has started today Sunday morning in Makkah, amid great attendance of delegations from more than 34 countries of the Islamic world. The meeting come to discuss a number of issues related to cooperation and integration in the field of standards and metrology in Islamic countries, in addition to attending the meetings of SMIIC's Board of Directors No. (17) and SMIIC 's General Assembly No. (13).
Saudi Arabia chaired the meeting after winning the chairmanship of the Board of Directors of SMIIC last year. Number of guests of the Kingdom and representatives of the member countries in SMIIC, member observers of SMIIC, a number of bodies and committees related to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and a number of regional organizations will participate in these meetings.
The meeting of the Board of Directors discussed a number of issues related to the members of SMIIC, the report of the Secretariat General, and some financial issues. In addition, the B of D reviewed a number of activities of SMIIC in the field of standardization and accreditation.
SASO has expressed its keenness that the meetings will be in a manner that is appropriate to the status and influence of the Kingdom, regionally and internationally. SASO noted that it is exerting efforts to enhance Islamic cooperation and joint work based on the value and status of the kingdom in the Islamic world, enhancing the role of standardization activities in economic and industrial growth, and encouraging intra- trade among SMIIC members.
For their part, the representatives of the Islamic countries expressed their deep appreciation for the efforts of Saudi Arabia in promoting cooperation and rapprochement among countries of the Islamic world, stressing the pivotal role played by standards in promoting intra-trade, as well as supporting and empowering national economies in the member countries of SMIIC.
These meetings come after the Kingdom, represented by SASO, won the chairmanship of SMIIC's B of D, for the period of 2018-2020; during the 12th meeting of the General Assembly held in the last quarter of 2017, in which the kingdom was elected for B of D membership, and Standardization Board membership for the period of 2018-2020. In addition, it was elected for the membership of Accreditation Board for the period of 2018-2020.
