79 Saudis Write a Success Story for the Region's Largest Regional Measurement and Calibration Center

The young youth of our country continue to prove their competence and excellence in various fields. More than 79 Saudi specialists work in the National Measurement and Calibration Center (NMCC) in the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO), holding PhD, MA and BS in engineering, physics, chemistry in addition to other specializations.

Metrology is an important pillar of the civil and military industry and for improving the quality of products and services. It has also become necessary in removing the technical barriers to world trade. Moreover, it contributes to the protection of the environment and the health and safety of society.

Since the establishment of NMCC, development steps have begun in accordance with the appropriate normative and environmental specifications to preserve metrological values and the associated uncertainty in order to match them with corresponding international standards.

They conducted more than 2015 tests to calibrate various measuring devices in more than 30 quality laboratories. NMCC successfully completed its first ICP participation with the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) in the field of length measurement through the path travelled by light in vacuum creating a meter. Results were among the top four countries of (37) participating countries worldwide.

The inter-comparisons activity is one of the most important activities of the NMCC, as it is considered one of the national centers specialized in measurement and calibration. The NMCC has conducted a large number of comparisons with international and regional counterparts. It has actively participated in many international inter-comparison programs. In 2017, the NMCC participated, internationally, in comparative measurement programs with the European Association of National Metrology Institutes, as well as the Gulf Association of Metrology. In addition, it participated in comparisons with the Turkish Institute of Metrology (UME).

The youth of the Kingdom succeeded in proving their excellence in the field of scientific research related to measurement and calibration. In 2017, 4 international researches were published in the fields of vibration and radio frequency measurements, in addition to 2 researches on the measurement of the strength of microwaves that were presented at the International Metrology Congress (CIM) in Paris. The four researches were conducted to establish Saudi measurement standards in these fields according to the international technical and scientific requirements, and then to verify the accuracy of their results in comparison with corresponding international measurement standards with international recognition. This is done in the hope of achieving standards' likeness to serve the Saudi trade in exporting and importing.

In order to establish the leading role of Saudi Arabia in the field of metrology, employees of the NMCC represent the Kingdom in meetings of the international specialized committees of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), the committees of the European Association of National Metrology Institutes (EURAMET) and others.
The NMCC employees also transfer knowledge and establish specialized training programs for all military and private sectors (private laboratories).
