SASO: Technical Regulations Require Manufacturers to Package Household Detergents in Sealed Leak-proof Containers
SASO has stated that maintaining consumer safety is one of its top priorities. The promotion of consumer safety is one of its most important objectives and strategic initiative. It has set enhancing consumer safety as one of its most important objectives and strategic initiatives, which it seeks to achieve through several areas, including the legislative aspect, which is represented in the preparation and issuance of technical standards and regulations that ensure acceptable limits of safety when dealing with goods and products in accordance with international practices. SASO's role also includes the technical aspect, through the examination and testing of goods and products in the laboratories, referred to them by relevant bodies, in addition to what is performed by the departments of conformity and quality.
SASO confirmed that it has issued more than 60 standards on detergents, in addition to the technical regulation on detergents, No. (MA-155-16-03-02), which stated "packaging household detergents in sealed leak-proof containers", in order to ensure that the safety and health of the consumer is not jeopardized. SASO also noted that standard (GSO 805/2009) for "Alkali Drain Cleaner" required that the detergent be packed in solid containers, and that the alkali drain cleaner packing should not be similar to food packaging to ensure that they are not confused.
Furthermore, SASO noted that standards pay particular attention to the labeling of products, especially high-risk detergents. The manufacturers are required to write warning phrases on the product labeling, such as "keep out of the reach of children", "keep away from eyes, skin and clothing", and "do not mix with other chemicals such as ammonia or acids."
SASO clarified that it has issued a technical regulation for detergents, which includes many household cleaning products such as liquid detergents for fabrics and clothing, colored textile detergent, laundry detergents, kitchen detergents, sodium hypochlorite solution for household use, hand washing soap, liquid dishwashing detergents, liquid antibacterial, and others. The regulation clarifies the basic requirements for the detergents included in the area of the regulation, in addition to conformity assessment procedures which suppliers must comply with to ensure the conformity of these products, in order to promote the health and safety of the consumer and preserve the environment.
Moreover, SASO has made continuous awareness efforts in this aspect through media. Previously, SASO has emphasized, through awareness messages (short films, Infographics), the importance of reading explanatory data, including warnings on products and how to perform first aid when exposed to detergents, with the need to take safety measures when using and storing. It has also stressed on the importance of closing the detergent tightly and storing it in a safe place, out of the reach of children.
SASO explained that it is working with relevant regulatory bodies, within an integrated system, to follow up the application of technical regulations and included standard specifications of related products .It assured that it would spare no effort to cooperate and coordinate with those bodies to verify the conformity of products offered in the markets to the Saudi standard specifications.
