SASO Clarifies Certified Requirements for Speed Bumps

SASO clarified that speed bumps are one of the means of traffic mitigation, used in roads, to force drivers to slow down at a location, for traffic safety purposes on the road.

Through its official account on Twitter, SASO published awareness messages to define the requirements for speed bumps. It confirmed that there are five justifications, stipulated in SASO GSO 2084: 2010, to set speed bumps. These are having heavy pedestrian traffic that require slowing down, critical street intersections, dangerous vertical and horizontal curves, work areas, and at the end of roads.

In a second awareness message, SASO clarified the requirements that must be met, when setting speed bumps, which are specified in the standard specifications. The requirements for setting speed bumps include being in high risk locations, providing warning devices that draw the attention of the driver, and providing sufficient time to slow down before reaching the speed bump. The standard specifications stipulated that speed bumps do not cause any damage to vehicles and passengers if speed limits are complied with.

SASO also noted that the standard specifications specified the certified forms and designs of speed bumps. It explained that there are five types of speed bumps; speed nubs, speed humps, speed cushions for emergency vehicles, speed humps with an upper flat surface, in addition to speed tables.
