 Laboratory of Chemical and Petroleum Products

 The laboratory of chemical and petroleum products is one of SASO's laboratories that was established to provide service and testing to ensure conformity of goods to Saudi Standards. It conducts a set of tests in this area.
 
Laboratory of Chemical and Petroleum Products Units :- 
 
First: Organic Chemistry Unit :- 
     The unit examines and analyzes the organic compounds in many materials such as:(cosmetics - air fresheners - food - organic compounds) 
 
The most important tests that are made in this unit :- 
1. Detection and estimation of the proportion of organic material 
2. Determination of fatty acids 
3. Determination of alcohols (ethanol and methanol )
 
The most important appliances used under this unit :-
1. Gas Chromatograph device, equipped with standard block CG MS detector 
2. Gas Chromatograph device, equipped with FID-ECD detectors 
  
Second: Radiation measurements Unit :- 
     The unit detects the radioactive isotopes and activities assessment in the following products:- 
1. Water 
2. Building Materials 

The most important appliances used under this unit :-
1. Gamma analyzer appliance 
2. Alpha analyzer appliance 
  
Third: Inorganic Chemistry unit :- 
The unit analyzes and determines elements in the following :- 
1. Drinking water 
2. Unfilled drinking water 
3. Detergents 
4. Aqueous solutions 
5. Fertilizers 
 
The most important tests that are made in this unit :- 
1. Determine of heavy elements 
2. Estimate the mineral elements 
3. Estimate the chemical and physical properties 
4. Classical tests 

 
The most important appliances used under this unit :-
1. PH appliance 
2. Incinerators 
3. Drying Ovens 
4. Atomic Absorption appliance ( AAS ) 
5. Chromatograph ionic appliance ( IC ) 


Fourth: Petroleum products unit :- 
The unit examines and analyzes the following petroleum products :- 
o Engine Oils 
o Auto Transport Oils 
o Hydraulic Oils 
o Gear Oils 
o Industrial oils 
o Gasoline 
o Brake fluid 
o Cooling water
 
 
The most important tests that are made in this unit :- 
o Determination of viscosity at temperature of 40 C , 100 C 
o Determination of flash point 
o Determination of spill point 
o Determination of the properties of the foam 
o Determination of the number tie 
o Determination of fall point 
o Determination of penetration 
 
 

The most important tests that are made in this unit :- ​

o Apparatus of determine the flashing point. 

o Apparatus of determine the spilling point. 

o Apparatus of determine the specifications foam. 

o Apparatus of measurement of sulfur. 

o Apparatus of automated distillation. 

o Apparatus of determine the viscosity at 40 and 100 degrees. 

o Apparatus of determine the viscosity at low temperatures. 

o Apparatus of determine the fall point. 

o Apparatus of determine the degree of penetration. 

Fifth: Food Testing Unit :-
     The laboratory examines and analyzes different samples of food products (chemically, physically and microbiologically).​

      o Determination of sugars
      o Detection of food additives
      o Determination of fats
      o Determination of protein
      o Determination of artificial colors
      o Detection of antibiotics in meat and poultry

      o Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (ICP)
      o High Performance (High Pressure) Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
      o Kjeldahl Apparatus
      o Soxhlet extractor
      o CHARM II

 
 2. Microbiological Tests​
 
     Microorganisms are organisms that cannot be seen with the naked eye and require a microscope, including (bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites).

The most important microorganisms are associated with food; some of which corrupt food and cause infection and poisoning for the consumer. The laboratory's most prominent functions are as follows :

  o Inspecting food samples and their products to ensure suitability for human consumption as well as being in compliance with certified specifications
  o Conducting periodic surveys on certain types of food to ensure their conformity with the specifications
  o Conducting  research and studies on the validity period of some food products

   The most important tests that are made in this unit :-
o Total count of bacteria. 
o Counting yeasts and molds. 
o Counting coliform group of  bacteria. 
o Counting  Escherichia coli bacteria.
o Counting Astavelocox aureus bacteria. 
o Detection of salmonella bacteria. 
o Detection of Sediminimonas bacteria.

o Incubators with temperature variation. 
o Optical microscopes.
o Water baths. 
o Colony-forming unit (CFU)
o Mixers. 
o UV lamp.
